榛名白川の河岸段丘上に築かれた梯郭式の平山城。箕輪衆と呼ばれた武士団を纏めて山内上杉氏に仕えていた上野長野氏の居城で、1512 年に長野業尚が築城したとされる。北条・武田・上杉の争いを長く跳ね除けた城だが、1556 年に武田方の総攻撃で落城。家康の関東入部後は井伊直政が入るも、高崎城に本拠を移したため廃城。巨大な堀切や土橋が続き見応えがある様はさすが 100 名城。遊歩道は未舗装路がメイン。

1512年長野業尚によって築かれた名城。国指定史跡、日本100名城の一つ。当時の遺構として、空堀などが見られ、また、本丸西虎口門などが復元されている。見学も駐車場も無料で利用可。
