Enryaku-ji

je japanski Tendai manastir smješten na planini Hiei u Ōtsuu, iznad Kjota. Osnovan je na početku Heian perioda. Hramski kompleks je podigao Saichō (767–822), također poznatz Dengyō Daishi, koji je iz Kine u Japan doveo mahayana budističku sektu koja će poslije postati poznata kao Tendai. Enryaku-ji je sjedište sekte Tendai i jedan od najvažnijih manastira u japanskoj historiji. Kao takav predstavlja dio UNESCO-vog lokaliteta Svjetske baštine "Historijski spomenici drevnog Kjota (gradovi Kyoto, Uji i Otsu)". Osnivači budističkih sekti Jōdo-shū, Sōtō Zen i Nichiren su proveli neko vrijeme u manastiru. U njemu se također nalazi dom tzv. "redovnika maratonaca."

Not at all easy to get to -- take Dramamine for the winding trip up the mountain. The oldest Buddhist temple in the area by far, it was built about 1200 years ago to protect Kyoto from evil spirits.

標高848mの比叡山全域を境内とする寺院。延暦寺の名より比叡山、また叡山(えいざん)と呼ばれることが多い。平安京(京都)の北にあったので北嶺(ほくれい)とも称された。平安時代初期の僧侶最澄(767年 - 822年)により開かれた日本天台宗の本山寺院である。住職(貫主)は天台座主(てんだいざす)と呼ばれ、末寺を統括する。
