Chartley Castle lies about 10 Miles NE of Stafford and was built circa 1100 by the Earls of Derby. It was rebuilt and strengthened in 1220 by the Earl of Chester before passing back to the Earls of Derby - the de Ferrers family. The castle was abandoned as a residence soon after the Earl was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 and the family built a moated manor -Chartley Manor - nearby. The manor house was used as a prison for Mary Queen of Scots, before it was destroyed by fire in 1781.
