Tredegar Park Cottage Hospital, Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent 23 November 2014 by Cold War Warrior Follow Me on Ipernity

Later the Aneurin Bevan Medical Centre, this historic cottage hospital closed down in 2010 on the opening of the Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan (Aneurin Bevan Hospital) in 2010 in Ebbw Vale. It was opened in 1904, funded by a weekly subscription of a halfpenny a week from workers supporting the Medical Aid Society and later donations from the Tredegar Iron & Coal Co. This was the inspiration for Aneurin Bevan's vision of the National Health Service. Of interest is the fact that AJ Cronin worked at this hospital, drawing on his experiences there to produce his powerful novel 'The Citadel' (with Tredegar changed to Blaenelly). This novel, published in 1937. did much to publicise the Tredegar healthcare model, assisting in the later foundation of the National Health Service. Politicians of all persuasions please heed Aneurin Bevan's words! I hope it will not be allowed to fall into decay and demolition.
