Mavericks is a <a href="http://www.maverickssurf.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">world-famous big wave surf competition</a> held every winter or two on 24 hours' notice, whenever 80-foot waves are deemed possible, at this break about a half-hour south of San Francisco and a few hundred yards offshore from Pillar Point. The bluffs of Pillar Point are the site of a massive Air Force radar station, but it's the waves (seen here on a calm day in early spring) that are most violent and frightening.
