Built in 1195 by the Normans to control a fording-point of the River Nore. It was a symbol of Norman occupation. James Butler, 3rd Earl of Ormonde, bought the castle in 1391 and established himself as ruler of the area. The Butler family resided there until 1967 and finally sold the deteriorating castle to the local Castle Restoration Committee for £50.
